Google to Delete Inactive Accounts: Users Urged to Take Action Before December

In a move aimed at bolstering user security and freeing up server space, Google is set to purge all inactive accounts by the end of November. Starting December this year, the tech giant will delete logins that have shown no activity in the past two years or more. The initiative, announced in May, is now prompting the company to notify account owners via email about the imminent removal.

The clean-up of inactive accounts is designed to enhance user security, targeting logins that lack basic platform protection requirements, such as two-factor authentication or robust passwords. Deleting these accounts is expected to mitigate potential threats and create additional storage capacity on the company’s servers.

How to Prevent Account Loss

Users still have the opportunity to recover their profiles before the December deletion deadline. To do so, engaging in quick activities with the login on any Google product is sufficient. This could involve:

  • Connecting it to an active Android device

  • Downloading apps from the Play Store

  • Using the account to watch videos on YouTube

  • Opening or sending emails

  • Utilizing the account as a login method for other applications.

It is crucial to verify whether the old profile is not being used to log in to third-party platforms. Losing the email could result in losing access to those tools.

What Google Will Delete

As part of this “purge,” Google will erase the following data:

  • Google Drive files

  • Google Photos backups

  • Calendar events in Google Calendar

  • Documents and files in Workspace

  • Gmail address and email history

For users concerned about losing valuable media before deletion, it is advisable to download all Google Photos files from the account. Conversely, those who have detached from their old logins need not take any action to delete the profile.

This move by Google underlines the company’s commitment to user security and efficient server management. Users are urged to take prompt action to ensure they do not lose access to important accounts and data.
