Loki | Who is Victor Timely, the Strange Kang Variant Debuting in the MCU

The second season of Loki has reached its third episode, introducing a new character known to Marvel fans – Victor Timely, portrayed by Jonathan Majors. This unique variant of Kang, previously teased in a post-credits scene from “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” has made his debut in the series, igniting intrigue and curiosity among viewers about his role in the unfolding multiverse narrative.

While Victor Timely is a familiar name in Marvel comics, the MCU version of this character differs significantly in how he fits into the storyline of Loki. To provide some context about this character ahead of his official debut in the series, let’s explore some key information about Victor Timely.

Who is Victor Timely in the Comics?

In the Marvel comic book universe, Victor Timely is considered a variant of Kang the Conqueror and Nathaniel Richards. However, he has chosen to reside in the early 20th century. Establishing his own city in Wisconsin, Timely uses his knowledge to create an industry, Timely Industries, aimed at aiding his future versions.

With his knowledge of the future, Timely finds himself in opposition to inventors of the early 20th century, ultimately responsible for building Chronopolis, Kang’s fortress, and placing it within the timeline. Using robots, he orchestrates his death multiple times, reappearing as one of his descendants. Timely’s influence extends to inspiring the creation of the first Human Torch and developing technologies that would later be used by Kang and even by heroes like Mr. Fantastic and Misty Knight.

Due to his knowledge and role in the primary timeline, Victor Timely becomes a significant variant for Kang, influencing various 20th-century events and impacting the villain’s ongoing battle against Marvel’s heroes. Essentially, he is a walking temporal paradox—a Kang who travels to the past to create the technology that the future Kang will use for time travel and other peculiarities.

Victor Timely in Loki

Although Victor Timely officially appears in the series starting with its third episode, he was previously introduced as an inventor in Chicago in 1893 in a post-credits scene from “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.”

In Loki, the same scene is revisited, but this time with more context. Portrayed by Jonathan Majors once again, Timely’s character gains knowledge through the influence of figures like Miss Minutes and Ravonna Renslayer, who work on behalf of He Who Remains.

The primary difference is that the MCU’s Timely is still unaware of the concept of variants or the origin of his knowledge. This lack of awareness might play in favor of Loki and Mobius as they attempt to save the TVA and the multiverse.

As of now, Victor Timely is not the same villain from Marvel comics. However, his future actions could contribute to shaping the conflict between the heroes and the villain Kang. This represents an interesting departure from his comic book counterpart, as it eliminates the notion that he possesses knowledge of the future and the ability to travel through the timeline. Considering the Council of Kangs seen in Quantumania, Timely might be the variant left behind, not invited to the club, possibly due to his lack of multiversal knowledge compared to the others.

The second season of Loki is currently streaming on Disney+, with new episodes released every Thursday, promising more revelations and twists in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
