The world’s growing concern over Artificial Intelligence (AI) stems from its potential for malicious use, such as the creation of “deepfake” videos in which individuals appear to endorse statements they never actually made. The swift evolution of AI is at risk of replicating the errors made by the technology industry during the inception of the social media era, as cautioned by Brad Smith, President of Microsoft, during a business forum in New Delhi on Friday.
Smith expressed regret at the technology industry’s slight exaggeration of the benefits that social media could bring to the world, acknowledging that while there are substantial advantages, the associated risks must not be overlooked. Speaking at the Business 20 (B20) gathering – a three-day assembly of private enterprises before the G20 summit – he emphasized the necessity of clear-sightedness, enthusiasm for the potential presented, and simultaneous contemplation of the drawbacks. He advocated for the establishment of safeguards from the outset of AI development.

The growing apprehension surrounding AI technology arises from its susceptibility to misuse, exemplified by “deepfake” videos that can propagate fabricated intentions attributed to individuals.
This technology, promising to revolutionize a myriad of professions, also instills fear among many workers who dread the transformation or even extinction of their roles.
Notably, a report released on Monday by the International Labour Organization (ILO) asserts that AI holds more promise for job creation than elimination. The study underscores, however, that this technology will bring about “potential changes in the quality of jobs, particularly in terms of work intensity and autonomy.”
