The SEO landscape is constantly changing and we’re always looking for new ways to beat the search engines. Yeah, I know the cliché, if you can’t beat them, join them. Sadly, we can’t join Google, so we keep trying to beat them in the SEO arms race.

So changes are happening, but one thing has remained constant – the necessity of links for your site to show up in Google’s algorithm . Google just can’t do without links and in order to get anywhere with SEO, you need backlinks – good backlinks. However, building links alone is not going to produce any results unless Google is aware of those links.

Links of outstanding quality, for example, links from posts on authority sites like The New York Times , get indexed on the same day they are published. Such links get indexed naturally, usually at close to a 100% rate.

That said, generally SEOs can’t acquire backlinks of that quality, so we settle for lower quality links. Even if you can get them easily, lower quality links still have their place in a natural link profile.

These lower quality links are followed by one common problem, though, and that is… getting them indexed.

Getting Links Indexed

Typical quality links get indexed at around 9% naturally. That means 91% of the link building effort you’re putting in gets wasted. All that effort, all those links, time, and money, for nothing. (Note that typical links you get off of Fiverr get indexed at around 3-4%).

Check out the results of an indexing test done by SEO blogger Matthew Woodward . You can see exactly how few links get indexed naturally.

link indexing case study

Thankfully, there’s a simple solution. You want to supercharge your backlinks so they actually get found by Google and help your site rank, and indexing is the best and most cost effective way of doing that.

I know you’ve been dying to know what the 4 keys to getting links indexed are, so here you go:

  1. Get your link on a high authority site: This is self-explanatory. The higher quality of the site your link is on, the more likely it is to be indexed.
  2. Make sure the page with your link has unique content: Spun content and duplicate content will only make it harder for your links to be indexed. Do your best to make sure there is some good content next to them and make sure you aren’t putting them on empty/thin pages too.
  3. Build links to your links: This is another way of saying “build a link pyramid”. I like to call this “link laundering”, similar to what drug dealers do (money laundering to turn bad money into good). In our case, we have cheap links at the bottom routing through higher quality links. This gives you the benefit of cheap links without the risk and indexes the pages at a higher rate.
  4. Create Google awareness: Pinging can improve your indexing rate because it prompts Google to check out the page. Submitting through Pingomatic or other free pinging sites is the easiest way to leverage this tactic.

Doing it the easy way

Generally speaking, taking these steps involves a lot of time and money. Having seen the power and importance of indexing in ranking sites, I set out to automate an easier way to make indexing happen and the most popular pinging and indexing services called Linklicious and One Hour Indexing.  (After all, SEO clients didn’t want to spend 10x as much to pay for links if they didn’t have to!)  These services remove all of the grunt work of getting links indexed and added a couple of Google-friendly secret sauce elements that can shoot indexing up to 70-80%.

Give this a shot and watch your rankings climb.
